False Cape State Park - April 9, 2019

After heavy rains overnight, the rains stopped just in time for 12 members of the Tuesday Group to meet at Little Island City Park for a 20 bike ride through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge in to False Cape Stare Park. Since the Refuge had just opened on April 1st, the roads were a bit bumpy and, with the overnight heavy rains, there lots of puddles on the roads in the park. After dodging the puddles for a while, some of us just gave up and peddled on through. Between the cloudy skies and the moderate temperatures, it was a perfect day for a ride.

On the way in to the park we stopped at the Barbour Hill dock on the bay to see the damage the winds and water had done to the dock. Then followed a stop at the Visitors Center for snacks and restroom breaks. Assistant Manager Cameron Swain gave the group an update on all the changes occurring in the park: the retirement of Manager Kyle Barbour, park takeover of the tram rides, delays on construction projects because of budget issues, etc.

The group continued on through the park with a stop at the Environmental Education Center and a walk over to see the Church steeple and cemetery at Wash Woods. On the return trip out of the park, the group again stopped at the Visitors Center with picnic lunches in the rocking chairs on the porch in perfect weather. And, since we could not end the trip without ice cream, a few of the bikers stopped at the Sandbridge Market for ice cream treats.

Only incident on the trip was the loss of a bicycle peddle which was quickly repaired at the newly-installed bike repair station at the Visitors Center.

Tues Group,

Rain on the way to the park didn't dampen enthusiasm for the 22 mile ride! Ken put together a fun ride and ranger lecture at False Cape SP.

See the pictures of snakes, ospreys herons and even a turtle. The real bonus of the ride was that the mud on my shoes was pretty white!
