On Tuesday, 9 May 2017, twenty two Tuesday Groupers descended on Surry County’s governmental center for another scenic ride through the countryside. Williamsburg Area Bicyclists also scheduled a ride at the same time—it was parroted after the Tuesday Group ride since a number of WAB riders rode with the Tuesday Group in the past. The ride leader for the Tuesday Group did not advertise the ride with WAB because bike club riders usually push the riding aspect more than the socialization. That isn’t the Tuesday Group. So, in Tuesday Group fashion, we started out a bit late, had a few bike issues, and stopped more that most groups do. But to the groups credit, the stops usually involved conversation, not recrimination. This group really spread out more than most with Bruce J taking the lead and everyone else as some stage of “behind Bruce”. The advertised 25 miles proved correct as it was 25.47 miles—rounded down of course. So Bruce must not have been the real leader or it would have been a real 29 miler. The ride is through a pretty stretch of country, with mostly flat roads. It passed a few historic sites like Bacon’s Castle and the Chippokes Plantation State Park. But more importantly, we stopped at College Run Farms for ice cream. This is strawberry season so there was strawberry ice cream and most riders participated. A few travelled back later to pick strawberries after seeing how large they were. The ride was pleasant in perfect weather—a little cool at the start and perfect at the end. Most then lunched at the fairly new Surry Seafood Co. on Grays Creek. It was a good day with great company. And more to come....
