Lafayette River Paddle 8/20/2013

We had a beautiful morning for 18 boats and 21 people launching from the Havens Creek boat ramp near the corner of Lewellyn and Delaware streets in Norfolk. We paddled under the Granby Street bridge and then under the Willowwood bridge and on up the Lafayette River. We passed many egrets, herons and beautiful homes on the water on our way to the ODU rowing boathouse Located in Lafayette Park. We almost got to Tidewater Drive before turning back.

We paddled back down the Lafayette and under the same two bridges on our way to the Colley Avenue bridge. After a little exploration, we headed up Knitting Mill Creek to lunch at O'Sullivans's wharf.

Following lunch, we headed back to the boat ramp to de-launch our boats onto the cars. We were just about to head to Doumars for ice cream when Bruce commandeered an ice cream truck from the childcare center across the street. In spite of the convenient orange-creamsicle and nutty-buddy, some of us wish we had held out for Doumars. Next time for sure.
