Fort Monroe 5/30/23

Trip Report for Fort Monroe Hike – June 30, 2023

After being on the fence because of the weather, I decided not to cancel and bring raingear. After the brief, 20 of us hearty souls set out on a 4 ½ mile hike. The wind was blowing in our faces as we headed down the seawall and a slight mist. About ½ a mile in we had one of our party (Ken) fall down and got a laceration on his head. The paramedics came and treated him. His wife took him to the hospital. Luckily too, we had an EMT and a Nurse in our group. Four stitches and a CT scan later, Ken is fine and resting at home. He will be back.

When we eventually got to the Fort itself, the rain came down. We all huddled under a tree and the majority decided to head back to the cars. A small group of us went on inside the fort as the rain let up. We saw the pet cemetery and other cool stuff. My grandkids especially enjoyed looking at all the pet headstones. Let me tell you, those kids had a lot of grandparents watching out for them and no rain can dampen their spirits. They had a blast. Thank you all for helping me keep them straight. About 12:00 we made it to the Firehouse Coffee 1881 shop. Some of the group that split off was already there. I must admit, I did not scope that place out in enough detail. They sell about half a dozen homemade sandwiches and I had us bring our lunches. Next time we will just plan to eat their food and leave our lunches at home. All things considered the weather was tolerable to a point and the injury turned out alright so, I’d say, we had a successful trip with one challenging event. See ya’ll on the next one.

Thanks Steve for leading this fun hike. The rain didn't dampen our spirits. It was great having your grandchildren with us! Real adventurous kids.
