Our first warm weather bike ride turned out picture perfect this day. Twelve eager cyclists rendezvoused at the Charles City Courthouse Complex for a ride on this section of the VA Capital Trail. Pedaling today: Vic and Margaret, Van and Kama, Ed and Jane, Steve R, Brian, Bob Saff, Carl, Tricia and Phyllis. We began the ride at a casual pace , delighting in the warmth of the sun, the balmy breeze and the sweet smell of honeysuckle, Lagustrum and fresh cut grass. We rode past fields of corn and wheat. A short detour down Wilcox Landing Road took us to the James River and the site of a famous river crossing by U.S. Grant during the Civil War (aka War of Northern Aggression). After this we took another short break at Westover Church and viewed magnificent Magnolias and Tulip Poplars, surely 200 years old or more! Our next stop was for lunch at Harrison Lake. We visited the National Fish Hatchery where we had seen sturgeon and baby shad on previous trips. But the baby shad had left the week before so there wasn't anybody in the nursery. We ate lunch by the lake and talked about cicadas and what it would be like to eat one (actually, only Brian said that). We then headed back to the Capital Trail only to meet Katrina on her way to meet us! The ride back was faster as we had made all of our stops on the first leg, the wind was now at our backs, there's more downhill traveling east and we were on our way to Cul's for dessert. At Cul's we feasted on cobbler, brownies, coconut cake and ice cream. Another great day for the Tuesday Group!
