It’s hard to believe we have been doing the Triathlon for 14 years time waits for no one. This was one of the better trips as far as the weather; we had winds out of the South/East at only about 10 MPH and a clear day, much better than years before. Everyone met there at Little Island City Park at 9:00 A.M. and we saw a few friends that we had not seen for almost 2 years, because of Coivd-19. On this trip we had Ellis & Marti, Bob S., Bob M., Phyllis, Steve, Sandy, Kathy, Brenda and Margaret & Bruce. We had our safety talk and were off by 9:30 A.M.
The biking part was about 6 miles through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and down into False Cape State Park stopping twice to take pictures and checks out a big cottonmouth lying across the trail. He was a little shy and didn’t wait to have his picture taken and moved off the trail quickly. We stopped at the Park’s Visitor Center for a bathroom break and to say hello to the park manager Cameron. Another 0.7 of a mile we were at the boat dock and got ready for the kayaking part of the trip.
The kayaking was to be 2 miles long but we all got together and talked about the best place to get out would be at Spratt Cove because of the low water level in the Bay and the new docks being so high. After only one mile we took out on a grassy bank and change into our hiking shoes.
The hiking part now would be twice as long as plan and then some, about 2.5 miles on the gravel and sand roads there in the park. Bob S. had biked down and we hike over to False Cape Landing there on the Bay to catch up with him before lunch. Here on the tables at the campsite we had our lunches before hiking out to the beach. After enjoying the beautiful beach with only one camper sitting on it for almost 3 miles we headed back towards the kayaks. We did get to see another Cottonmouth with 2 of her young babies lying on the side of the road in a ditch and did get some pictures of them.
Kayaking back to the boat house and storing the boats away we biked back to the Visitor Center for another bathroom break and an Ice Cream, which we our famous for. Biking on towards the parking lot at LICP we finish about 3:30 P.M and all said they had a good time and headed back into the afternoon traffic here in Hampton Roads. HOooooo Boy! Thanks to all that came out for this year’s Triathlon. Bruce
