York River State Park Hike 4/19/2016

We are barely a month into Spring but today felt more like early summer with balmy breezes, temperatures reaching into the low 80s and...bugs. Thirty seven Tuesday Groupers met at York River State Park this morning for what turned out to be a 7 mile walk on gently sloping trails paralleling the York River. We were joined by a few new folks including Amanda who works for the State Park. She helped explain some of what was going on in the Park and even convinced a little snail to come out of his (her?) shell to say "Hey"! We started out on the Backbone Trail following it to the Majestic Oak Trail (where we saw the Majestic Oak--which was impressive but must have been much more so back in the day) and then to the Pamunkey Forks Trail. We took the short side trail out to the York River overlook adding a mile on to the trip but it was well worth the look-see. Then we headed back to the Backbone and eventually the visitor center. We spent another 30 minutes or so gazing out at the river, watching the osprey and looking at stuff in the gift shop. Some headed home after that but most headed to Honey Butters Restaurant in Norge for a lunch of good old-fashioned comfort food. No one had room for dessert but everyone had a great time.
