Fort Monroe Hike 7/6/2021

We had 18 people for our hike in and around historic Fort Monroe. We stood in the very same spots where Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, John Tyler, Ulysses Grant, Andrew Jackson, Edgar Allen Poe and Theodore Roosevelt stood to name a few. Our route included passing by the new visitors center which was closed but we looked at all the informative signs. Moving on we hiked the boardwalk past the Old Point Comfort Lighthouse ending up at the yacht club where we ate our bag lunches and had ice cream for dessert. A big hit was the Pet Cemetery.

The fort is also known as freedoms fortress and was built after the war of 1812 and substantially completed around 1834. It is well worth a visit.
