On this beautiful August morning, 22 boats (20 kayaks and 2 canoes) launched into the Lafayette River from the Haven Creek boat ramp - near Granby and Llewellyn Sts. We paddled east, under the Granby St. bridge and then south, past the Zoo, and under the 27th St bridge. We next encountered a lower bridge across Tidewater Dr and barely made it underneath (laying down required for some). From here, we thought we were far out in the country. Very little sign of human habitation, several great herons, snowy egrets and beautiful grasses as much as 10 ft tall. After a half mile to a mile, the river narrowed sufficiently that we had to turn around - heading back to the main river channel. We paddled east to Knitting Mill Creek and docked and O’Sullivans Landing for lunch. Winds were occasionally pesky, but not a big problem. Overall about 7-8 miles.
