Newport News Park Paddle 9/10/2013

We had a hot and humid day for a brand new paddle at Newport News Park today. But Ellis and Marti showed up in their brand new way COOL kayaks (Marti in her spitfire orange eddyline and Ellis in his fireball red eddyline) and heated things up even more. They enjoyed (tolerated?) many suggestions for getting in and out of their boats as well as how to hold their paddles, sit in the kayak, turn the kayak, etc, etc. Tuesday Groupers are always loaded with advice to share!!! Paddling today were kayakers Ellis, Marti, Steve, Sandra, Jean, Mark B, John F, Bill B, Ken, Bob S and Phyllis and canoers Ron and Sue. We slipped under the noisy I-64 overpass to explore the upper reservoir first. It was a tight squeeze! Bill and John led us all the way up a narrow tributary trying to find the source. We went as far as we could and then turned back. We scooted back through the underpass and paddled to our lunch spot. We found a covered picnic table and settled down to our lunches accompanied by curious squirrels and ducks. Tomorrow is Ellis' 40th birthday so we sang a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" and then ate some birthday cookies. After lunch we paddled a bit more and then headed back to our take-out point. Newport News Park reservoir is kind of muddy and our boats were in need of a bath! Baths later, ice cream first! We finished up the day at Sweet Frogs. Another great day for the Tuesday Group!
