Sleepy Hole Paddle 8/9/2016
As always the weatherman had a bad weather forecast for Tuesday and I am sure that kept some people away from this paddle. People you cannot listen to the weatherman because if you do you will spend your last remaining days indoors, so come on out each Tuesday and have FUN! We showed up for our paddle at a new place, this could have made some stay away; it was at Sleepy Hole Park in Suffolk. With their new Kayak Ramp we had to try it out and 7 of us did. On this beautiful day, cool breezes, outgoing tide, enough clouds to keep the sun away and as we paddled across Wills Bay and almost around Wills Island which is not an island but is called an island. We then headed towards Hwy 17 and the Nansemond River Bridge, here the tide turned and started back in and this worked out great because we turn also and headed across the river. With the tide coming in we paddled about 3 miles up the west side to 3 small creeks and a nice beach that we took out for a 15 minute break. This would be a great place for a lunch spot on another paddle at a later date. Bill, Bob and Jim took pictures and they are all great making our trip look even better. Richard K. came down to watch us off with his big boot that he needs to wear for 2 more weeks, good luck Richard.
We had left at 9:20 A.M. and returned at 12:20 P.M. for a 3 hour trip and paddle 7.8 miles on a beautiful day. The water with low tide was only about 3 feet deep (except when we cross the river twice) making it a very safe place to paddle. After we loaded our kayaks, 4 of us drove to Driver Virginia to eat our lunch which was only about 10 minutes away. We all had Bar-B-Que and 2 had ice cream, I will let you guess which 2 out of Jim, Buck, Bill and Bruce had the ice cream cone. This was a fun day with a good group of men, yes I can say that because we didn’t have any women, where has all the girls gone? Aug. 9, 2016 Bruce
