We had a great paddle today despite the forecast. Tropical storm Ophelia was mostly gone but left behind some cool temperatures, rain and wind that threatened to swamp our paddle. But this is the Tuesday Group and we prevailed! Six hardy souls showed up at the Old Point Comfort Marina for our paddle today shrugging off the weather report. Paddling today were Bruce D, Bill B, Christine, Gayle, Sandy and me, Phyllis. (Girls outnumbered guys today!) We launched under grey skies and a healthy breeze and headed up past the Marina towards Mill Creek. The water was a bit "bumpy" but once we passed under Mercury Blvd and into Mill Creek, everything smoothed out. Once we were protected from the wind, the water was smooth as glass! We followed the shoreline, exploring some of the nooks and crannies along the way. We saw egrets, herons, kingfishers, pelicans and a bald eagle. Around noon, as we made our turn to head back, the wind kicked up and we were able to ride the waves a bit. We then encountered a sailing group of 5 small boats doing drills. They were fun to watch as we tried to stay out of their way. We had fun surfing and navigating the waves! The clouds kept it cool and occasionally dropped a little mist on us but not enough to dampen our spirits! We made it back to the marina and then headed to the Deadrise for a yummy lunch. Total distance was seven miles. Another great day for the Tuesday group!~Phyllis
