Newport News Hike Feb. 25, 2025
When I set this hike up, we were having Winter weather at it’s best and for a week I was not sure if anyone would sign-up. After we had 10 in. of snow and cold temperatures about 6 days before we were to hike, the weather turned around and out came the sun with the temperatures in the high 60’s. All the snow was gone, but did leave a little water in some places that we hiked around.
The names started coming in and on the last day I received 4 emails and on the morning of the 25th I got 2 more making the total of Tuesday Groupers up to 40. There were 3 that couldn’t make the hike for different reasons, so that made our group at 37 hikers.
We all got there at Richneck Road at the parking lot and after everyone had signed up, we got into a circle so I could talk to the group about our hike and of a contest I had for them. I also had mapped out 2 trips for the group to hike on, there were a few that didn’t want to hike the 5-miles loop, so I had a 2-mile loop for them. I always try to accommodate everyone so each will have a great hike.
There was a Stonehenge, consisting of 3 large rocks with 2 smaller ones on top, which was at the last half mile of the hike, 3 ladies spotted it at the same time and cried out together “I see it” which made it hard for me, because I only had one prize. I think they worked it out between themselves. Some of the hikers were trying to make a Stonehenge out of different material along the way, but that didn’t work.
We had 2 small detours on the hike, one to the tunnel which goes under Denbigh Blvd. and the other one was out to see 4 beautiful trees there in the park. I think everyone loved seeing them, but it did add a little over 6 miles for the total distance, but it was a beautiful warm day to hike in the woods, and that is what we did.
We got back to the cars and 26 drove to the Pizza Rest. for lunch, all and all a great day. I hope everyone enjoyed the hike and lunch as much as I did.

Thanks to Bruce for leading this hike in what turned out to be perfect weather! We were able to experience the tunnel, the railroad tracks, puddles, awesome boardwalks, and the four beautiful trees on this six mile walk.
