Another fabulous paddle today and likely our last : ( for the season. 17 boats rendezvoused at the James City County Marina for our paddle today. Mild temperatures in the low 60s, overcast skies and no wind combined for a serene paddle through still waters. Joining in the fun today were: Jim, Jack, Jill, Brian, Tom, Buck, Curt, Bill, Kenny, Don, Sandy, Gayle, Vic, Margaret, Jean, Mark and Phyllis. Yeah, quite a crowd. The majority of the group chose to explore Powhatan Creek while the rest (Brian, Sandy, Bill, Tom and kenny) circumnavigated Jamestown Island. The Powhatan group enjoyed a magical paddle following the creek farther than we've ever been able to go before. Our kayaks almost seemed to propel themselves as we sliced through water flat as glass with nary a ripple from our paddles. We saw several bald eagles, hawks, kingfishers and Great Blue heron. As the creek narrowed we came upon a committee of vultures nesting in the tops of pines and cypress lining the water. There must have been 40 or 50 of them! We stared up at them and they stared down at us. Nobody said a word! We paddled as far as we could and turned around and paddled back to Powhatan Park for our lunch break. Some stayed in their boats while the rest of us got out to stretch our legs. As we tucked into our lunches, we were visited by an officer of the VA Marine Police. He gave us pretty orange stickers to help identify our boats in the event we get separated. Apparently, wayward boats are a common occurrence and these stickers help to reunite boats with their owners. After lunch we enjoyed Jill's cookies, Don's brownies and Phyllis' Halloween candy. And then we paddled back to the Marina where we met up with the James River group. Another fine day for the Tuesday Group! We make the outdoors great again!!
