Wormley Creek 5/31/22

Ten paddlers showed up for the TG first paddle of the year. Typical summer weather was here and we were really ready for it, after all the rain, wind, and cool temps we have had so much of this month. We paddled almost 6 miles, from the put-in to the mouth of the Creek, past the Yorktown Coast Guard "marina", all the way to the dam that we plan to pedal across next week on Phyllis's Yorktown Bike Ride . It was high tide and we actually paddled under the road over the dam. Bill said he got some good dam photos. As we paddled back Sherri found fossils on the riverbank across from the USCG station. She jumped out of her kayak onto the narrow shell/rocky beach and gave us animated and interesting info and even handed us scallop and other fossils, 4 million years old. We had souvenirs to take home!

We paddled back to where Wormley Creek flows into the York River and pulled up our kayaks on the sandbar and sandy beach which at high tide is an island. It was hot, but no bugs, and we had a nice westerly breeze. The Oreo cookies sat in the sun while we ate our lunch and at desert time the cream filling dripped out of my cookie. Still good.

We were missing some of the regulars, possibly due to the preceding Memorial Day three-day weekend. New faces amply filled the gap. I enjoyed getting to know some of the group better.

After the pull-out we headed to Sweet Frog for a quick dessert on the way home. Actually it wasn't that quick because we had a great time chatting and telling stories. Bill was unable to get a cone, but he enjoyed the yogurt in spite of it.

Kayakers were Steve, Kathy, Kevin, Gayle, Bill, Sherri, Wayne, Jack and Jill. John Barnes was on his paddleboard.
