We enjoyed a fine paddle today, thankfully being spared the devastation of Hurricane Florence that recently flooded the Carolinas and spawned tornadoes in Richmond. The forecast for early afternoon thunderstorms convinced us to paddle Powhatan Creek as opposed to going out to the James. We were eleven today: Brian, Bruce D, Bob M, Jack, Don, Steve Ralph, Kathy, Sandy, Steve L, Glen (newbie) and me. Bill had given a Rotary talk that morning at Kingsmill and showed up to say "Hi" but a lingering cold kept him from joining us for the paddle. We launched from the James City County marina and paddled about 5 miles seeing heron and one bald eagle. We were able to get pretty far up the creek as there was plenty of water. We took a short snack break at the turn around point and decided to head back to the marina to eat our lunches. Back at the marina we encountered Newport News middle school students getting some instruction in canoeing from the James River Association. They did pretty well considering the wind, tide and total lack of experience. The instructors did the best that they could. It was a bit comical! We loaded our boats and then went to eat our lunches at the Billsburg Brewery which is located right above the marina office. The bar lady gave us lots of free samples and everyone (nearly everyone) settled on their preferred libation. We ate, drank and talked on the deck outside. And had chocolate. It was a very pleasant paddle and lunch afterwards with special friends. No, we didn't go for ice cream afterwards--we chose beer for our carbs today!
Another great day for the Tuesday Group! We are so lucky to have each other!
