Capital Trail Ride 5-31-16

On Tuesday, 31 May, eleven Tuesday Groupers arrived at Chickahominy Riverfront Park to ride the 14 and a half miles to Charles City. What can we say: it was a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine and just the right temperature for a relaxed ride. The Capital Trail again served up the beauty of nature with varied greenery from open field to full overhead tree canopy. The rolling trail is what most people would describe as flat, it is new so it is in great shape for riding any type of bike. We waited at the start point for one rider which only served to put us at our stop in Charles City just in time for their opening. This group could roll! And Cul’s Courthouse Grille doesn’t open until 11 a.m. This put us in front of all the other customers so we shortened the usual wait at Cul’s. They have beefed up their staff on weekends, but not on Tuesdays. On the return ride, some went straight back to Chickahominy Riverfront Park to get a head start on travelling back across the HRBT. A few of us took a detour on Sturgeon Road after reading signs pointing to Fort Pocahontas. It was a mile and a quarter detour to a closed park. Ever the law abiding citizens, we did not violate the property rights; but, after returning, we googled “Fort Pocahontas” and found that Harrison Tyler, the resident owner of Sherwood Forest and direct descendent of President Tyler owns it. He bought it in 1999. The website talked about tours, but the e-mail didn’t work. So we have some detective work to do to get a possible tour in the future.

We did, on this day, enjoy Tuesday Group camaraderie, perfect weather, and a great day with friends in beautiful Tidewater, VA.
