Poquoson River 5-1-18

This year’s Poquoson River Paddle was blessed with the first day of “perfect” weather this spring. The weather was nice and warm, low humidity, light winds, lots of sunshine. (Recent days have been so very windy we couldn’t have done it and instead would have paddled upriver to the Harwood’s Mill Reservoir dam, also a good paddle.) Nineteen TG kayakers (including one canoe) met at Rodgers A. Smith Landing on a high tide. We paddled up three creeks to their end (6 inches of water and mud), and then lunch on the lawn followed by the usual ice cream table. It was so nice to see the river without white caps and unrelenting wind.

Bill, Jim, and Bob took lots of great photos. The photo I remember most was of the Canadian Goose’s nest near the end of Quarter Marsh Creek. My how they guarded it! Between the lowered head of the one on the nest, and the diversion antics of its mate, very exciting to see. So now we have seen a real "goose egg"). We also saw lots of Egrets, herons, ospreys, etc.

Being the first paddle (seven and a half miles) of the year for me, I was tired, so I smiled and waved as everyone except me headed back to the ramp (because I was already home!)
