On Monday it rain all day here in the Tidewater Area and I wasn’t sure what the trails would be like for our Tuesday Group Hike. I had hiked this area on Saturday and the trail looked very good for this hike with 8 people that had signed up but now on Tuesday after 1 in. of rain and with 37 people that had sign-up on Monday, I didn’t know if the trail would be good for that many people sloshing through some of the wet areas. As we hiked about a mile down the trail I could see it wasn’t too bad after all.
Bill, Margaret and me stopped at the nearby McDonald’s for breakfast there close to the Harwood Wood Mills Park. Leaving there about 8:35 we pulled into the parking lot at the reservoir at 8:50 and one car was already there and then everyone started pulling into the park one after the other, it was like I had pulled a plug and they all came driving in.
We had our safety talk and all 37 called out their names and then we were off. The park had open up a new area for people to hike and horseback riding, not sure about bikes, this area is full of grass and would be hard biking. We hiked out to the runway there at Newport News Airport and got to see one small plane take off, I was hoping for one or two commercial jets to fly out but none were to be seen.
We hiked about 6 miles and return to the parking lot about 12:30 and half of the 37 hikers chose to go to Joe’s & Mammies Pizza for lunch. The service and food was good and we all headed home about 2:00 P.M. trying to avoid the back up at the tunnels a lot of us had to go through. The weather was cool, the hikers were great and the day was another great Tuesday Outing.
