Bike-Hike 10/18/22
I started the day with 9 folks signed up and a twenty-degree temperature drop after a cold front passed during the night and early morning. Temperatures were in the mid 50’s. Andy, Sherri and her cousin let me know they were not going to make it. I did not receive any word from two others. John Barnes, Debbie Supper arrived and Sandy Canepa called saying that she was running late. We started out from the house after Sandy arrived and had an uneventful ride to Back Bay Wildlife Refuge.
Although cloudy, I think everyone enjoyed the boardwalks at the refuge. We walked through all the of the walks and trails near the BBWR visitor center enjoying the bay vistas. We spent about an hour on these trails.
From the refuge boardwalks, started out on the West Dike toward False Cape State Park. It was uneventful except for an encounter with a smiling Cottonmouth that we were able to avoid. We were able to get a Bill Billings style group picture at the False Cape State Park. John Barnes helped guide the group with his extensive knowledge of the area. We then proceeded to the Barbour Hill Boat Dock and lingered before heading to the Visitor Center and then on the Sand Ridge Trail to the South Inlet Trail and overlook (John’s suggestion). We ate lunch at picnic tables near the boat docks close to the Wash Woods Center. We went down to the beach using the False Cape Landing Trail. From there we started for home making a brief stop at the Visitor Center. Encountered another snake on the way home.
As we passed Little Island Park, John suggested that we walk out on the fishing pier. We enjoyed the views of the beach and the breaking waves.
When we got back to the house, Debbie found that she had lost her cell phone. All four of us returned to the fishing pier checking the bike path along the way. This was last place Debbie had her phone. We found her phone near the entrance to Little Island Park so the day ended on a good note.
A personal note: While I was a little disappointed with the turnout, the small number in our group allowed us all to communicate well with each other and to be flexible in what we did. We did not return from the hike until about 5:00 PM. I have to believe that because of the small number that showed up, cool weather and of course the individuals that showed up were all elements that made this an exceptionally good experience. I think that the other participants would agree with me.
