Capital Trail Bike Ride and Swim 6/18/2013
The day started with a 70% chance of showers. Sixteen members of the Tuesday Group braved the dire weather forecast showing up at the Chickahominy Waterfront Park at the appointed time. After the conch shell horn sounded, the bike ride commenced heading towards Jamestown on the Capital Bike Trail. After winding around over bridges and across wheat fields we arrived at the Jamestown Festival Park where we took a break. Marti and Bailey headed back to Chickahominy Park. The rest of the Group followed Ellis to Jamestown Island. On the causeway, we saw a fledgling bald eagle perched in a tree overlooking the James River. Arriving at the Island we noticed lots of tree debris on the road. Then we found our way was blocked by a sign telling us to keep out. We guessed that there were trees down on the Island road. Being forced to turn around, we biked back past the Festival Park taking the spur trail towards the Jamestown High School. On the way through the wooded and ever winding trail, we saw a couple of deer. Sprinkles of very light rain actually helped keep us cool. Arriving back at the Chickahominy Park some of the more adventurous rode to the top of the bridge. Bill B amazed us all by pulling out a small kite that he flew from the bridge. Joining the rest of the group back at the Park, we found that the pool was closed because of the threat of storms. We ate our lunches at the picnic tables where we watched Bill B give Corbin helicopter flying lessons. Bailey told us she had seen a mom and two baby fawns while riding back with Marti. When we finished our lunches, we finished things off with ice cream treats. It was another great day for the Tuesday Group in spite of the weather forecast.
