On Tuesday, 30 July. 2013 sixteen Tuesday Groupers met at the Governmental Center in Surry, VA. A record was set that day--everyone was early! I can only conclude that everyone was ready to ride. The weather may have influenced that as it was warm, but not hot; it was sunny but with plenty of cloud cover; and there was a slow steady breeze even when we stopped the bikes. It was an uneventful ride--that’s a good thing. I had described it as a ride on roads with minimal traffic. The first vehicle that passed us was a huge logging truck. Bruce J commented " that was a pretty big piece of traffic!" The ride route was pleasant and mostly level. When we entered Chippokes Plantation Park, Bruce took us by the farm corrals and we were treated to feeding time of the Pot Belly Pigs. These porkers are noteworthy for their humongous bellies that drag on the ground as they walk. The attendent said they are also easier to domesticate and that is why they are popular. Who knew? Bruce J led us on a different route through the park--past the Summer House of the plantation and down along the river. After taking in the river view at the visitors center, we headed back toward Surry. We travelled a different return route and stopped at College Run Farms where they sell homemade ice cream. Bellies full we started out for the return trip. Steve gave us extra time to digest as he had to fix a flat tire. But then we were off. Most then enjoyed the southern cooking of the Surry House Restaurant. No one ordered the "all the time special" of four ham biscuits, peanut soup, apple fritter, and peanut pie. Was it because we had seen the Pot Bellied Pigs a short while earlier? Hmmm? Sated, we then took off in every direction till the next Tuesday outing. Good friends, good food, good times.
