On July 19, 2016, eighteen Tuesday Groupers met at the Surry Governmental Center facing a forecast of heat and rain for the days bike ride. The forecast for rain had slowly diminished in the forecast from two days prior when we talked of cancelling the ride. On this day, it did not get as hot as predicted and the rain held off likely till everyone had a chance to travel home. The lure of the Surry ride is the bucolic scenery along the road, the relative absence of car traffic, and flat terrain along the route. It is a 26 mile ride with enough stops to keep us from being overtaxed, and bathrooms “soon enough” for most. But the real draw is the stop at College Run Farms for ice cream. We pretend like berry picking is the lure, but the ice cream is the real treat. This was blueberry season and naturally they have blueberry as well as vanilla—made on the premises.
Again, the weather was pleasant, a slight breeze and temps below hazard warning phase. We finished the ride and headed to a new restaurant in Surry, Surry Seafood Co. Surry Seafood Co opened a month and a half ago on Grays Creek. The Restaurant was a step up from Anna’s—the only other restaurant open in this part of Surry County. The food was enjoyable for all, the AC worked and kept us inside for good conversation among friends. A good day. We beat the weatherman again!
