Nineteen Tuesday Groupers assembled at James City County Marina on this very fine summer day for a paddle on Powhatan Creek. Joining in the fun today were: Bob M, Bill Billings, Bill Bunch, Christine, Stephanie, Steve C, Steve L,Bruce G, Bruce J, Patricia, Margaret, Jack, Jill, Terry, Marrian, Brian, Gayle, Samuel and me, Phyllis. We were all so happy to see Brian join us for this trip! All were in kayaks except for S&S who were in their robin's egg blue canoe. We happily used the fairly new floating dock/kayak launch and left the marina en masse beginning our paddle up the creek. Morning temperatures were moderate, there was almost no breeze or current and the tide was favorable. Birds chittered and fluttered in the marsh grasses as we paddled by. We kept a leisurely pace eventually rendezvousing on the other side of the hwy 31 overpass. About 1/2 the group turned back at this point while the rest continued on. Rains the previous day contributed to a lot of water in this marshy area so we were able to paddle a good distance. The creek soon dissolved into a randomly flooded forest leaving no clear channel. There had also developed a very strong current with the outgoing tide. Eventually we all turned back and rode the current back out to the main channel. We caught up to some of the other paddlers and continued back to the marina. We got our boats and gear loaded everyone helping everyone else- and then headed over to the Billsburg Brewery to eat our lunches at some picnic tables outside. This was Samuel's last TG outing as he is heading back to his home in Montana! We will miss him! Total distance ~ 7 miles. Another great day for the Tuesday Group!~Phyllis
