NN Park to Yorktown 10/24/23

22~ Mile Bike Ride from Newport News Park to Yorktown

On this beautiful autumn day, 27 cyclists gathered at Newport News Park for a 22~ mile bike ride to Yorktown. The group seemed excited to start the ride, and their excitement was only heightened when they saw a Bald Eagle high up on a power pole. After introductions and the safety talk we started out. The first few miles of the ride were on the Newport News Park Bikeway Trail, a paved/gravel trail that winds through the park's woods and wetlands. The group enjoyed the scenic views and the cool morning air shortly crossing over into the Yorktown Battlefield National Park. Unfortunately, after a few miles, we reached a roadblock construction zone on the route. We then had to take a detour onto a busier road, but we were careful and everyone stayed safe. After the detour, the group continued on their way to Yorktown. We stopped at the Battlefield Visitors center riding past several historical sites along the way, and the Yorktown Victory monument for group pictures. Once in Yorktown, the group stopped for lunch at the Yorktown Pub. The Pub gets four stars for seating us in a tent where we were able to enjoy lunch, and have a chance to rest and socialize in a private space. After lunch, the group continued on to the Yorktown Battlefields heading back to Newport News Park. We took a different route on the way back, which gave us a chance to see more of the area. The group arrived back at Newport News Park tired but happy. We enjoyed a beautiful day of biking and exploring. And yes, some of us had ice cream from the camp store.

We got the grand adventure Ellis promised us! Part of the parkway was closed for serious construction so we got to see some different scenery.

The Yorktown Pub had a big tent set up for us for lunch which worked out very well. My best shots of the day were of an eagle on a power pole and of two house flies cleaning the dishes. The weather was perfect and we had a great group.

See the pictures in the album full screen so you can see the captions I put in.

Thanks to Christine for including me in a shot and thanks to Ellis and Marti for keeping us going.
