Surry to Bacon's Castle 5/26/15

On Tuesday, 26 May 2015, the Tuesday Group met at the Surry Governmental Center and took off on a 25 (++) mile ride stopping at Bacon’s Castle for lunch, Chippokes Mansion for bathrooms, and College Run Farms for Ice Cream. Just to let the cat out of the bag, (++) is code for “I am not real sure of the mileage of the bike ride, paddle or hike. In other words it is code for Julian miles! In this case we were close, the 25 (++) mile ride was only 27 miles. But it was flat and we had plenty of stops. AND we had absolutely perfect weather—absolutely perfect. It was warm with a slight breeze that lasted for the whole ride. Bacon’s Castle, the oldest brick building in Virginia and the only example of Jacobean Architecture was a stunning site for lunch. Their 12 or so picnic tables welcomed us—a few did have to make up to trees because of the lack of restrooms. But there was plenty of shade. Next stop at Chippokes Plantation, we made extensive use of the bathrooms. Bruce led us on the trail option to see if there were any animals, see creatures, or black snakes—we didn’t see any—and we then headed on to Alliance Road on to College Run Farms. The Farm had their signature home made Strawberry Ice Cream, but no cones, so it was good that Bill Billings wasn’t there. Bob S. Carl, Bruce, Pearl, Richard, Mark, Faye, Sandy C, Melissa M, Buck, Diane, Steve R, Ken, and Brian had their fill and headed back to the governmental center parking lot. Bob S. and Carl headed to Anna’s for lunch—they figured two people wouldn’t overload the one waitress. All the rest went on their way. Brian decided to go ahead and try the Strawberry picking before catching the ferry—a good decision, the strawberry picking was great. Another great day outside with good friends. This is the Tuesday Group.
