The crisp autumn air bode well for the Tuesday Group’s bike tour to Hampton Roads Vineyards and Winery. We assembled at the Morningstar residence in Smithfield, all 26 of us, on a clear, sunny morning. The trip would take us across quiet, picturesque country roads in both Isle of Wight and Surry counties, roads lined with pastures and cleared cotton and corn fields. All that was left for the farmers was to reap the soybean crops. We all set off, eager to reach a great venue at the midpoint- the vineyard with ample picnic facilities, wine tasting for those who wanted it, and a special treat, a 90 foot goat tower complete with several goat families in residence.
The vineyard owners were there to pour the wine and the wine slushies, as well as to tell us all about the goats. Well- rested from the 13-mile ride, we headed back for an ice cream social at our starting point, where we all enjoyed the rustic atmosphere of Ken and Michelle’s log home while soaking up those calories.
