On August 5, 2014, the Tuesday Group had the largest gathering ever for a paddle down Diascund Creek to the Chickahominy River. Cheryl S attended the launch and ferried paddlers from the take-out site. She was driving a VW for the car shuttle, but forgot what the record number of people was that were ever crammed into a VW. Anybody remember? At any rate, we set our own record for today. The weather forecast gradually became less threatening until this morning predictions of rain were almost zero—and that is what happened. A little cloud cover early on to give us a cool start; a good current from high tide receding to give us relief in paddling; and placid waters to allow us to gaze, talk, whatever. The Diascund is different with many shades of water lillies and grasses. A few bald eagles to perk us up; a few fish jumping to irritate us since we didn’t have any fishing gear; and then we realized we were hungry. We pulled into the Chickahominy River and headed down to Eagles Rest Marina and the Blue Heron Restaurant. Alas, just before we put-in, a luncheon party arrived at the restaurant and took away any chance of fast service. But the Tuesday Group handled it with aplomb! That is, except for the trip leader. Brian, worried about not being on time for a doctors appointment, skipped lunch and headed out without lunch. So what do you call a leader who deserts his group—call it Lyme disease. And three weeks of antibiotics. O well, catching the virus early leads to a sure cure.

Bruce J and Bill B. led the group back onto the water, and.....
as we finish our meals everyone headed back to their boats and tried to get back in them after a great lunch without tipping over and all did great. With the two boat loads of seniors that got in before us (about 35) it was almost 2:00 P.M. before we departed the restaurant. We had talked it over about taking the short cut (sorry Brian) and we all did and this saved about 2 miles off the trip. The tide was still on it's way out but the wind blowing right into our faces, although it did feel good, did slow some of us down just a little. Reaching the take-out everyone was feeling good about having such a great paddle that we didn't all want to go home but everyone loaded their boats on top or inside or onto trailers and said our good buy's and headed home. It had to be about 10 miles total distance and with some of the best views of hills, homes and trees I have ever seen. There was a total of 6 Bald Eagles, and too many Osprey to count and 4 or 5 Great Blue Heron. We all want to Thank Brian for putting together this paddle even though he did leave us on the River alone. Hope that Lyme Disease is gone fast !
