Powhatan Creek 10/15/24

We had a perfect day for our paddle today.  A cold front threatened brisk air for us but bright sun and no wind made the  temperature more than comfortable.  And the amount of water in the creek allowed us to paddle all the way up to the footbridge.  Trying to choose a day where the tides are favorable makes a huge difference. Assembling at the Jamestown Marina to paddle today were: Bruce D, Bill, Gayle, John, Catherine, Mike, Kim, Kathy, Jack, Jill, Steve L, Ellis, Marti, Kevin and me, Phyllis.   We had our safety talk and then launched our boats into the smooth quiet water.  Paddling was easy as we coasted along with the incoming tide.  We saw several Great Blue Herons as well as bald eagles.  We passed the old bald cypress tree, went under the Route 31 bridge and continued on as the creek dissolved into a broad swamp of leafy deciduous trees.  We followed the widest bends of the creek , illuminated by the dappled sunlight filtering through the treetops, until a fallen tree stopped our forward progress.  Bill wanted to get out of his boat and go over the blowdown but we persuaded him no to do that. So, we headed back out stopping for a group photo at the old cypress.  We were nearly back to the Marina when the wind started to blow a bit.  We now had the outgoing tide in our favor so paddling against the wind wasn't too bad.  We got our boats out and loaded and then found some fine picnic tables at the Billsburg Brewery to eat out lunches.  A few of us celebrated with some excellent beer-all agreed it was an excellent day!  Thank you Tuesday Group!~Phyllis

Thanks to Phyllis for leading this pleasant trip on a beautiful day! I was able to get an unusual picture of several buzzard butts! Marti did get us together for a shot around the great old tree in the middle of the creek.
