We had another great paddle on the peninsula today. Last week we launched from James City County Marina and turned left to paddle up Powhatan Creek. This time we turned right and followed the creek out to the James River. Kayaking today were Bill B, Steve L, Ken and Kay, Gayle, Bruce G, Christine, Sherri and me, Phyllis. We were very happy to welcome Sherri back to paddling and glad she has recovered from her injury! We launched from the marina, headed down the creek and into Sandy Bay. We encountered some shallows here and a fair amount of current while paddling under the Jamestown Island causeway but all made it without incident. We were treated to a lovely paddle down the James River as we began our trip around the island. The river was smooth, we had a nice current to paddle with and were treated to the sites of historic Jamestown. We rounded the tip of the island, passing Black Point and soon found a beach for our lunch break. We ate our lunches, swam in our little cove and were treated to Sherri's rendition of "Mention my name in Sheboygan". (This is a must listen if you haven't heard Sherri perform this old classic!) Sadly, we had to leave the beach (a perfect spot) and begin our journey home. We paddled up Back River, into Sandy Bay, Powhatan Creek and back to our launch spot at the marina. Some headed home while the rest of us enjoyed some brews at the Billsburg Brewery. (Bill B. found an exceptionally affordable ice cream sandwich at the marina store and enjoyed that as well). We paddled a bit over 9 miles. Another fabulous day for the Tuesday Group!
