“It’s not where you go in life that matters; it’s who walks beside you along the way.” Such must be the thinking of the thirty three (yes, 33!) terrific Tuesday Groupers who signed up to walk together through a Walmart parking lot on January 20th. Walk through the parking lot we did, leaving behind the big box stores, chain restaurants and other trademarks of suburban Chesapeake. We crossed the ten (yes, 10!) lanes of Battlefield Blvd. in our allotted 18 seconds, and turned onto the relatively quiet Independence Pkwy. This road threads its way through a corporate park where workers looked longingly out their windows as we passed by in jovial conversation. Two quick turns and we entered the oasis of Oak Grove Park. After a break and a group photo (thanks, Bill!), the group quickly covered the two miles around the glistening lake. As the sun rose higher, so did the temperature. By the time we were back in the parking lot with 5.7 miles under our belt, many were carrying their shed coats, hats or sleeves. We finished the day with lunch at the Pirate’s Cove restaurant and a birthday celebration for Marti and Margaret (great cakes, Phyllis!). Thanks to all who came; and especially to Ellis and Phyllis for coordinating it all. Who’d have thought a trip to Walmart could go so well?
Diane
