Twenty four members of the Tuesday Group enjoyed nice weather, good views and great company while hiking the three loop trails at Waller Mill Park. We started the day with an easy mile on the Shelter Loop Tail before crossing to the west side of the reservoir. After a group photo at the Lookout Tower, we continued around the 2.9 mile Lookout Tower Trail. We were on the lookout for future paddling opportunities in the reservoir, as well as those pesky tree roots. Normally a tranquil hike, we were surprised by the constant sound of gun fire from a police firing range outside the park. Back at the parking lot, we grabbed our lunches and began the final loop. The 1.5 mile Bayberry Nature Trail led us to Shelter #2 with plenty of tables for lunch and continued along one of the east fingers of the reservoir. Dale and Aubrey found a spot at the point to check the water temperature. It may have been too cold for canoe rentals, but it was OK for a swim! Our hike concluded with a selection of ice cream at the boat rental office. One of our tech savvy hikers reported that we had walked 7.8 miles – are you sure you didn’t run to the outlets when no one was looking Bill?
