Christingle and choosing a gift from a plastic bag

At this time of the year, (Advent or Epiphany) one of the things we really get excited about is gifts, because through the giving of gifts, we remember God’s gift of his son to us .

I have some gifts here which I am removing from my plastic bag, and I’m going to ask some children to come out and choose a gift for themselves, from the table.

(From the bag take out three gifts and place on a table, leaving a £5 note hidden in the plastic bag, which is set to one side of the table.)

(Invite three children to come out and take part and invite each to choose something from the table)

Wait until all three have chosen, and as they stand watching , say to everyone.

Now you may think that there were three gifts on the table, because I chose three children to come and collect them, but there were in fact four!

The fourth one was here inside this rather dirty plastic bag ; I did say choose anything from the table, but no-one chose this.

It did have inside it a £5 note !

THE BEST THINGS ARE OFTEN FOUND IN THE MOST UNLIKELY PLACES! (Just like finding a baby in a stable.)

Just like our stable....... very ordinary, dark, and not all that clean......

This was the place he had chosen to house his treasure.

The baby Jesus.

We may consider ourselves unworthy, unfit, unclean even, but we too can house this treasure,

all that is needed is an open door, an open heart

our YES, for God’s son to live in us today.
