Opening puzzle: How many words associated with Hallowe’en

HALLOW…E’EN.

I know what day it is today, and WITCH festival is usually celebrated today.  This day OCTOBER 31st, is for many a different sort of day, but most days seem the same, and you never know when you come to school whether you’re in for a TRICK OR A TREAT.  But today is WIZARD in some people’s minds!

Teachers think that most children come to school, expecting very little to happen, and they have a HAUNTED look about them.  Some days it seems that they’re little DEVILS, WARTS and all and they can’t even SPELL properly.  The children can also be DEMONS in the playground and get quite CATty with each other, and in lessons they are too FAMILIAR and just ‘POTTER’ around doing nothing in particular.

Teachers in the staffroom at break BREW up a pot of tea, take their cups and just sit there like ZOMBIES, not knowing whether they’re COVEN or going.  They don’t stand a GHOST of a chance with some pupils.

So why don’t you make today a special day, by grabbing a BROOM AND MAKING A CLEAN SWEEP OF THINGS.  You never know this school might just TAKE OFF!  That would be a TURNIP for the books!

Try adding the above assembly entitled Saints using the magic bag with spots…

to explain that Halloween was a festival in ancient times about darkness, fear and being worried.

People used bonfires and candles to chase away the darkness. Today children use lanterns, with scary faces to do the same.

Children get very excited about Halloween, but there is something far more exciting, in that God knew the world had become a dark place, and he sent his light into it, his own Son, so that we need never be afraid. The light is far more powerful than the darkness. His Son, far more powerful than evil.

Using the bag of spots mentioned in Saints, and describe how the world was afraid of the darkness. (show inside of bag) so they went  in search of God, to look for the light, ( show the spotted handkerchief) They could not find God, or see him, because of all the bad things they had done. They knew the must say sorry to God first. So they did, (put handkerchief inside) and they found that there was only one person who could wash away what was wrong in their lives. It was Jesus, his blood simply washed their sins away. They became known as saints/ believers. The light of God became theirs. The sins, ended up here (show inside of bag with spots) Jesus took them onto himself.

A girl was once asked a question in an exam, ‘What is a saint?’

She had seen some windows recently in a cathedral, so she wrote, ‘Saints are people the light shines through’.

She got it right. Hold the holy handkerchief up to the light or a light. We become special saints when we don’t just keep the light of God to ourselves. No we let it shine through us to others.
