Wise and Foolish (The House on a Rock)

 (Resource Pack  36)                                                                                                                                     KEY STAGE  1 & 2

VIS AID: Wise and Foolish Masks/tape of music & a kaleidoscope

The aim is to simply enjoy the telling of parable by learning and acting out a new song (tape inside resources pack).

First introduce the parable using a kaleidoscope, showing one or two children sitting at the front, that they will all be able to see completely different things when they look through it.

So too, with parables. Sometimes we understand them; sometimes they confuse us; sometimes we're not quite sure, but we enjoy them anyway.

After telling the story, from Matthew's gospel:  (Matthew 7. 24-27) invite two children to put on the masks, and act out the song as they hear it.

Therefore everyone who listens

to these words of mine

And acts on them is like a wise man,

who built his house on a rock

And that's when the rains came,

and the floods rose, and the gales blew and blew,

And hurled themselves against that house,

But it did not fall…

But if anyone who listens

to these words of mine,

And pays no heed is like a foolish man,

who built his house on the sand,

And that's when the rains came,

and the floods rose, and the gales blew and blew,

And hurled themselves against that house,

And great was its fall…

It fell upon that silly man and great was his fall!

There are other well known tunes to this parable you could use, if you cannot access this one.
