This recipe won first place in a Birmingham, Al BBQ cookoff in the early 80's and has been a favorite in our family since then. It keeps extremly well after opening in the refrigerator. Adjust heat accordingly by adding more or less ground pepper.
Alabama Style BBQ Sauce
32oz catsup
1/2 c vinegar
1/2 c water
1/2 c worsterschire
1/2 c honey
1 tbsp chili powder
2/3 tbsp ginger
3 heaping tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp sage
1/4 tsp celery seed
1 tsp ground red pepper
1 tsp crushed red pepper
1/2 tsp ground cayenne pepper
1 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp minced garlic
tabasco to taste
Stir frequently while adding ingredients. Do not boil. Simmer over medium heat for about 45 minutes. Adjust taste by adding m/l pepper.
