I've seen several articles about cold brew coffee of late and I thought I'd jot down my thoughts. I've had cold brew while out in a few places and it falls flat compared to the coffee made with a Filtron.
I get it, everyone likes their coffee a little different. Some like it strong and black, some like it weak, some sweet and in the end it really comes down to what YOU like.
Several years ago our good friend Tommy from New Orleans had these two caraffe's in his refrigerator. Both were Community Coffee brand and one was dark roast and the other was hazelnut. Both were made with a Filtron. After inquiry and ensuing discussion we found one locally and Ive been using it for years, durable yes and makes plenty of iced coffee. Not just any coffee, concentrated iced coffee. It makes about a quart of strong coffee with a 12oz bag of your favorite grind. As I recall, Tommy had one dark roast and one hazelnut. As I said this is concentrate, so I use about 3-4 parts milk to 1 part cold brew. Being so strong a quart really goes a long way in terms of servings and keeps in the fridge for weeks! I know people who have bought these little one serving things where you brew coffee and then pour over ice, yuck. It's not the real deal.
Don't go running off to Amazon to find this because it's not there. Look on their website www.filtron.com or in upscale gift stores/coffee shops.
Cold Brew Filtron Coffee
Special tool: Filtron Brewer
12 oz bag Community Coffee with Chicory (get fresh ground if you can)
Water
Agave
2% milk
splash of half and half
Set the filter first then the cork in the bottom of the Filtron
Pour in the entire bag of coffee
Add cold water to the reservoir (top of the Filtron), set it on top and let it drip.
When the water has dripped thru, remove the top and give the coffee a stir.
Add water again to the reservoir but only up to the first graduation in the reservoir (about 1/2" deep) place again and let it drip
Once the reservoir is empty the coffee water mix should be almost at the top of the container. Flip the empty reservoir upside down, place on top and let it sit on the counter 24 hr. Ive heard that if you put it in the fridge it makes a difference but I cannot taste it.
Next Day
Place clean caraffe' on counter, remove lid. Remove the top off the container and carefully lift the filtron with one arm and place the bottom directly over the caraffe' opening . Pull the cork with the other hand and place the filtron all the way onto the caraffe'. In a 15-20 minutes you'll have a completely full jug of ready to drink coffee concentrate.
In a tall glass add about 2 oz of the cold brew, being sure to leave some room for ice, top with 2% milk then add a good splash of half and half and a squirt of agave. Stir well and add large ice cubes to fill the glass. Viola!
