A system that comprises a combination of the basic structures is the flexible manufacturing system (FMS).
An FMS is a hybrid of job shop and a cellular manufacturing system. It provides great flexibility in terms of the types of parts and the process sequencing that can be used, a consequence of its high degree of automation. Material and information flow throughout the system is totally automated, and very little human intervention is required.
