Not intended for exploration by the living, the realms of the afterlife are the final resting place of those who possess souls who have now passed on. Their influence on the material world has been severed, now being limited to their endless toiling in the land they now call home.
For most, the afterlife is a desirable place to be once one has passed on. For others, eternal torment awaits them...
Often the biggest questions pondered by mortals prior to the Awakening, many religions came up with their own theories and understanding of how the afterlife works. Now that the answers to the great beyond are present, and with it - more questions. For the purpose of this section, a 'mortal' is any being capable of being slain through violence who possesses a soul.
Birth: When a mortal is conceived and their heart begins beating within the womb, life blooms and a soul will soon follow in one of many ways. Typically souls form on their own alongside the beating heart, however occasionally through rebirth or reincarnation a soul will enter the body of the fetus before a soul has been formed.
If a fetus is to die, the soul will leave to pursue another unborn child to attach to instead. In rare cases, a soul may still grow in a fetus who already has a soul who has pursued and attached itself to it, and often results in a dual-spirit child. Dual-spirit children are often misdiagnosed as being possessed, or possessing multiple personality disorder.
Death: When a mortal dies, their soul leaves their body and ascends to the afterlife, often leading to an afterlife appropriate to their life. Mortals who previously worshipped a deity are sent to that deities' realm of the dead. Some deities such as YHVH share their realm of the dead with other similarly aligned deities (such as Shinda).
Once a person has died, their soul is an immaterial and formless mass. This mass is nearly completely indestructible outside of the efforts of a deity or similar efforts. Souls are able to be harmed, however the harming of a soul - regardless of its perceived evil - is seen as the greatest sin any being can commit, and Hell is one of the only places where the souls tortured there are deemed acceptable to torture - but only by Satan and his demons.
