Each character possesses an occupation, determining their skills and abilities, as well as opening up avenues for new occupations for the character to take later on as they master their skills.
At character creation the player receives a single occupation without spending the TP cost to acquire it, however they must meet any prerequisites the occupation may have before they take it.
Outside of character creation, characters can choose to take more Occupations. Doing so costs the TP cost listed on the Occupation. Some Occupations are upgrades to prior ones which require one Occupation to be taken first (example, from Prince/Princess into King/Queen).
Receiving skills from additional occupations doesn't increase the skills proficiency if they already possess the skill. They take the highest skill proficiency of all occupations they own if they have multiple. For example, a Mage who takes Priest as an additional occupation uses Competent Rank in Spellcasting in place of the Priest's Trained Rank.
An occupation you have taken before can be taken again, however its benefits are different. Doing so grants you a +1 Rank to three different skills you received as part of taking the occupation, however each time you take the same occupation past the first increases the TP cost by 1.
Promotions are upgraded forms of an occupation or represent specializations one can take to master different areas. When taken, promotions often increase a group of skill proficiency and offer new skills. These new skills work like normal, using the highest proficiency among all of your skills, but the increases actually increase a skill's proficiency by 1 (or more) step. If you did not possess said skill, and it mentions that skill being upgraded, you increase it by the amount the upgrade lists. (For example; if a Promotion would mention "+2 Ranks to Sight" but your Sight was still untrained, you increase it by two steps so it is now Trained.)
Promotions can be taken multiple times, the benefits granting a +1 Rank to three different skills granted by the Promotion or which have their ranks increased by taking. In addition to this, Promotions have special abilities which upgrade when the promotion is taken multiple times.
Bonuses to ability scores granted by Promotions can exceed the stat maximum.
Promotions feature special abilities as part of them, these special abilities often function similarly to Talents however they are acquired as part of taking the occupation, and some upgrade alongside the Promotion if it is taken multiple times.
Some occupations give the character equipment if taken at character creation. For example Soldiers receive weapons and armor as part of taking the class at character creation, however if the occupation is taken during gameplay they do not receive this.
If a player would receive useless gear from an occupation you can permit them to liquidate the useless gear into half its total value. This should only be done in cases where a character would receive an item they physically cannot use (such as a Constructed (Spirit Armor) receiving armor which they obviously cannot wear).
Promotions which include equipment grant the equipment to the character upon taking the promotion. If they wouldn't be in a position to receive the equipment (such as taking a promotion while away from civilization) they receive it upon their next arrival to civilization or whenever would be appropriate.
Occupations usually list a wage representing how much money they earn per in-game Month by working their respective occupation. Some occupations (like Assassin) do not however, usually being "by contract" instead of an hourly wage, and earning a set amount of money as determined by the one issuing the contract.
While away from settlements or civilization for a long period of time (such as being out on the road, in a dungeon, on a quest, in the wilds, or being imprisoned) they don't receive their wage. GMs are free to ignore this rule, but ideally a reason should exist as to how this money is came upon (such as being loot found in a dungeon).
For wage, use the highest of your non-Promotion Occupations if you have multiple and then add your Promotions' increases to this amount.
Occupations are the primary source of player characters being able to learn spells, and only certain occupations grant this. Occupations will list in their description if you become a spellcaster upon taking it. Being a spellcaster affects how much MP you receive as well as allowing you to learn spells by spending Training Points.
Most occupations list spells or spell powers you acquire as well upon taking it, these are gained the first time you take the occupation. If you would take the occupation again you acquire one additional spell per casting type granted by the occupation in addition to the other benefits granted by the occupation. For example, if you were to take Priest again you would gain one spell and one divine spell.
