Defending against attack comes in different forms, however armor serves as the greatest means of defense against would-be attackers. Armor comes in a couple different varieties, and some are rarer than others. Lighter armor allows for more maneuverability while granting minimal protection, while the opposite is true for heavy armor.
Some armor can be made with Special Materials, increasing its defensive properties.
This functions as a separate "HP" bar, with the armor taking the damage in place of the wearer until its DP is reduced to 0 at which point the armor is broken, and excess damage is dealt to the HP of the wearer. DP can be restored through Armorsmithing.
Defense Points (DP) applies to all damage sources unless otherwise specified (such as psychokinetic damage).
This is a stacking penalty that is applied to Physique and Dexterity skill checks for each piece of armor worn. Typically this only applies to Combat and Physical skills.
Armor can be made to be personally fitted for you - doing so costs an additional amount of money equal to half the original price (before special materials or magical enhancements). While wearing the armor you reduce the AP by 1 while other people wearing your personalized armor instead add an additional 1 to the AP.
This is a penalty to movement speed while this armor is worn. This penalty applies to all forms of movement speeds (land, fly, swim, and so on).
Where the armor is worn. Two pieces of armor of the same location cannot be worn unless one of the pieces of armor lists as being "stackable". Multiple pieces of stackable armor can be worn in the same slot, plus one piece of armor lacking "stackable", for example a great helm can be worn alongside a chain coif and gorget for a total of 100 DP to the head.
Unless a called shot is made, it is up to the defender where the attack hits. Called shots deal a -20 penalty to the attack roll, however allow the attacker to decide where they hit.
Shields function similarly to armor, except that they can be used to eat up some damage from an attack. Raising a shield to deflect an attack costs 2 Stamina to perform, and the shield takes any damage the body part struck would have otherwise taken.
If damage would surpass the shield's DP the overflow damage is instead dealt to the armor (if any) or individual's HP if there is no armor defending the area.
Areas covered by a shield which are automatically considered to be blocked by the shield are listed in the "Auto" category; if an area is listed under "Auto" then no Stamina needs to be spent in order to block a body part with the shield, allowing the wearer to consider themselves as blocking with the shield in that area without deliberately needing to block. Blocking with the shield in this way is still up to the wearer, and they can choose not to block with the shield if they want.
