Baked apple french toast with caramel sauce

This recipe and ingredients were handed out to ward members to make breakfast for our ward Christmas party.  Oh my.....it was DELICIOUS.   A definite keeper we need to make from time to time.  It tastes a lot more decadent than the ingredients suggest.  This could be a desert instead of a breakfast.

18 x 12 pan (13 x 9 pan) = 54%

INGREDIENTS:

Caramel sauce (make right before serving):

INSTRUCTIONS:

    The night before serving:

The night before serving, coat the baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.  Place bread in two layers on the bottom of the pan.  Combine eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla in large bowl - beat well and pour over bread slices.  Place apple slices on top of bread. Combine cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar  - sprinkle on top of apples. Cover with foil and refridgerate overnight.

     In the morning:

Preheat oven to 350º then bake covered for about 50 minutes.  Remove foil and bake 10 minutes more.

Just before serving, make the caramel sauce.  Combine all ingredients in a medium sauce pan and cook over medium heat until it begins to thicken stirring constantly...not to thick.  You want to be able to spread it.  It usually takes only a couple of minutes.  Spread or pour over french toast as soon as it comes out of the oven.

If you've served this before, get out of the way quick before you're trampled to death as people scramble to get some on their plates.   Yea......it's that good. Ideal for Christmas morning.
