Wolf (1994)

Will Randall (Jack Nicholson) là một người làm nghề biên tập sách tại nhà xuất bản. Câu chuyện xảy ra khi ông một mình lái xe trên đường cao tốc New England. Phát hiện xác một con sói nằm ngang trên đường, Will dừng lại xem chuyện gì xảy ra và con sói vùng lên cắn ông rồi bỏ chạy.

Sau nhiều ngày trôi qua, ông bắt đầu cảm thấy cơ thể mình có sự thay đổi lạ. Đầu tiên là tâm lý khác thường, rồi thị giác, thính giác và khứu giác phát triển vượt trội, Will có thể nhìn, nghe và ngửi thấy từ những khoảng rất cách xa. Ông dần dần biến thành người sói đêm đêm đi rình cắn những chú hươu nai và các con vật khác, vấn đề trở nên nghiêm trọng hơn khi Will bắt đầu cảm thấy bị mùi máu người hẫp dẫn. Lúc này, Laura Alden (Michelle Pfeiffer) - cô con gái cưng của giám đốc nhà xuất bản nơi Will làm việc – lại phải lòng ông. Laura yêu Will mà không hề biết ông đã hóa một con thú khát máu.

Mọi việc trở nên rắc rối khi cảnh sát phát hiện vợ Will bị ám sát, kết quả khám nghiệm cho hay cô đã bị cắn xé rách toạc cổ họng. Cánh điều tra ngay lập tức chĩa mũi nhọn nghi ngờ vào ông chồng bởi nhân viên khách sạn khai rằng, tối hôm trước họ có cuộc cãi vã ngoài tiền sảnh. Thám tử Wade Bridge (Brian Markinson) tới lấy lời khai, Will hoàn toàn suy sụp trước cái chết của vợ và nghi ngờ chính bản thân mình. Laura lờ mờ cảm nhận được điều gì đó, phát hiện đôi giày dính bùn đất của Will, cô có cơ sở tin rằng những phán đoán của cảnh sát và của chính cô là chính xác. Nhưng họ đâu biết rằng, ngoài Will ra, ở nhà xuất bản còn có một người bị hóa sói khác…

Will Randall is bitten by a wolf while driving home in Vermont. Afterwards, he is demoted from editor-in-chief of a publishing house when it is taken over by tycoon Raymond Alden, who replaces him with Will's protégé Stewart Swinton. When Will thinks that his wife Charlotte is having an affair with Stewart, he rushes over to his house where Stewart sees Will angry and asks him what the problem is. Will bites Stewart and rushes upstairs to the room to find Charlotte half-naked. His worst fears are confirmed. Will becomes more aggressive, taking on the characteristics of a wolf.

With the help of Alden's headstrong daughter Laura, Will sets out for his new life. His first escapade as a werewolftakes place at Laura's estate, where he wakes up at night and hunts down a deer. In the morning, Will finds himself on the bank of a stream, with blood all over his face and hands. He visits Dr. Vijav Alezais, who gives him an amulet to protect him from turning completely into a wolf. Alezais asks Will to bite him, as Alezais does not have long to live and would prefer "demonization to death". After refusing, Will keeps the amulet so that he will not transform at the next full moon. Calling Laura to explain, Will, now a werewolf, breaks into the zoo and steals handcuffs from a policeman. Muggers want his wallet, but he attacks and bites the fingers off of one of them. He wakes up in his hotel, with no memory of what happened.

Will outmaneuvers Stewart at their work and fires him, urinating on his shoes in a bathroom and claiming he is "marking his territory". While washing his hands, Stewart finds fingers in his handkerchief and realizes he has attacked and wounded someone. Stewart attempts to frame Will in order to seize his job back. Detective Bridger knocks on Will's door the next day to deliver him the news that Charlotte was found dead with canine DNA on her body. Will then wonders if he murdered Charlotte, but he does not know it was Stewart who killed her.

Believing Will is a murderer, Laura goes to the police station. There she runs into Stewart, who makes an animal-like pass at her while sporting increasingly obvious werewolf traits. Laura hurries away, making arrangements for her and Will to leave the country. Stewart follows Laura back to her father's estate and kills two guards. After a brief struggle in the barn, Stewart attempts to rape her, Will intervenes, and the two fight. Stewart is shot to death by Laura. After he returns to his human state, Will has a brief moment with Laura and then runs into the forest.

Minutes later, Laura shows heightened senses when the police arrive, telling Bridger that she can smell vodka on his breath. The final scene is a close-up of her face fading into dark, wolf eyes, and a close up of Will completing his transformation into a full werewolf.

Thông thường chủ đề về người sói trong các tác phẩm điện ảnh thường không được khai thác sâu và phức tạp hóa vấn đề, bộ phim này cũng không là một ngoại lệ. Wolf thiếu các tình tiết gây bất ngờ và có một cái kết theo đánh giá chung là “đến trẻ con cũng đoán ra được” ngay từ đầu. Kèm theo cốt truyện nghèo nàn, kịch bản không mấy sáng tạo là nghệ thuật hóa trang kém cỏi khiến nhân vật người sói trông hết sức giả tạo. Thật đáng ngạc nhiên với số tiền đầu tư ban đầu cho Wolf cao ngất ngưởng 70 triệu USD, các nhà làm phim lại cho ra lò một tác phẩm không xứng tầm như vậy. Bù lại, diễn xuất của Jack Nicholson và chuyện tình lãng mạn của người sói Will Randall và người đẹp Laura Alden có thể giữ chúng ta ngồi lại hơn 2 tiếng đồng hồ để xem bộ phim này. Đặc biệt đôi mắt sói hiện lên cuối chan chứa tình yêu có lẽ là cảnh ấn tượng nhất trong Wolf khiến khán giả nhớ mãi.
