The Notebook (2004)

The Notebook is a 2004 romantic drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes and written by Jeremy Leven from Jan Sardi's adaptation of the 1996 novel by Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s. Their story is read from a notebook in the present day by an elderly man (played by James Garner), telling the tale to a fellow nursing home resident (played by Gena Rowlands, who is Cassavetes's mother).

The Notebook received generally mixed reviews, but performed well at the box office and received a number of award nominations, winning eight Teen Choice Awards, a Satellite Award, and an MTV Movie Award. The film became a sleeper hit^[3][4] and has gained a cult following.^[5][6] On November 11, 2012, ABC Family premiered an extended version with deleted scenes added back into the original storyline

At a modern-day nursing home, an elderly man, Duke, reads a romantic story from his notebook to a fellow patient.

In 1940, Seabrook Island, South Carolina, poor lumbermill worker Noah Calhoun sees 17-year-old heiress Allison "Allie" Hamilton at a carnival, pursues her and they have a summer romance. Noah takes Allie to an abandoned house that he intends to buy for them. They try to have sex for the first time, but are interrupted by Noah's friend Fin with the news that Allie's parents have the police looking for her.

When Allie and Noah return to her parents' mansion, Allie's mother Anne calls Noah trash and not right for her and they ban her from seeing him. Noah walks out and Allie chases after him; an argument ensues, leading Allie to break up with Noah. The next morning, Anne announces that the family is returning home to Charleston. Allie attempts to contact Noah, but is unable to find him, so she asks Fin to tell Noah that she loves him. When Noah gets the message he rushes to Allie's home, only to find the house gated up and empty.

Noah writes to Allie every day for a year but Anne intercepts the letters so that they never reach Allie. Noah enlists with Fin to fight in World War II, where Fin is killed in battle. Allie volunteers as a nurse's aide in a hospital for wounded soldiers, where she meets captain Lon Hammond Jr., a young lawyer who comes from old Southern money. After a few years being together, the two become engaged, to the delight of Allie's parents.

When Noah returns from the war, his father has sold their home so that Noah can buy the abandoned house. While visiting Charleston, Noah witnesses Allie and Lon kissing at a restaurant; he convinces himself that if he refurbishes the house, Allie will come back to him. Later, while Allie is being fitted for her wedding dress, Allie is startled and faints when she sees in the newspaper that Noah has completed the house to the specifications she made years before.

After Allie asks permission from Lon to take a little trip before the wedding, Allie returns to Seabrook to find Noah living in the restored house. The two rekindle their relationship and eventually have sex. Several days later, Anne appears on Noah's doorstep to warn Allie that Lon has followed her to Seabrook. Anne reveals that, in her youth, she had been in love with a lower-class young man and was still thinking about him; Anne then gives Allie the letters that Noah wrote to her as an admission that she had hidden them from Allie. Subsequently, Allie confesses to Lon that she had spent time with Noah, and eventually returns to her relationship with Noah.

In the present narrative, it is revealed that the elderly woman is dementia-stricken Allie, Duke is actually her husband Noah and that he had been told by Allie during the early stages of her illness to re-read their journals to help her recall her past. She briefly remembers Noah but soon forgets; her ensuing panic forces medical personnel to sedate her. Noah suffers a heart attack and is sent to the hospital, while Allie is sent to a dementia ward in the same hospital. Noah visits Allie's room at midnight, causing her to remember him again. He proceeds to remind her of her illness, though he reassures her that they can do anything with the love they share. They kiss, hold hands and fall asleep together, with Noah telling Allie, "I'll be seeing you". In the morning, a nurse discovers that they have died in their sleep, with their hands still clasped together.

The Notebook cũng “ăn điểm” nhờ những cảnh quay đẹp như tranh dưới bàn tay Robert Fraisse. Bộ phim mở đầu bằng cảnh mặt trời lặn, không gian chìm trong màu đỏ máu và đàn thiên nga đang bay về tổ. Khán giả nữ hẳn sẽ rất thích thú với những kiểu váy áo thanh lịch, quý phái của thập niên 1940 được cô tiểu thư thành thị Allie diện ở mỗi cảnh phim. Nhưng trên hết, sức hút mạnh mẽ nhất của bộ phim chính là diễn xuất tuyệt vời của Rachel McAdams trong vai Allie. Từ một “ong chúa” cầm đầu nhóm những cô nàng chảnh chọe trong Mean Girls, Rachel hoàn toàn lột xác thành một thiếu nữ trong sáng, ngọt ngào trong The Notebook. Năm 2004 là một cột mốc không thể nào quên trong nghiệp diễn của Rachel McAdams khi cô liên tiếp có hai vai diễn ấn tượng như vậy.

Đối với những nhà phê bình khó tính, diễn xuất thuyết phục của Rachel McAdams đã “cứu” cả bộ phim, làm cho câu chuyện trong phim trở nên chân thành, đáng tin hơn và bớt đi vẻ giả tạo. Lưng thẳng, tóc vấn gọn ghẽ, chỉ khẽ nhếch môi khi trò chuyện với ánh mắt màu thép lạnh, Joan Allen đã thể hiện thành công một người mẹ cay nghiệt và uy quyền - người hết sức phản đối mối tình của Noah và Allie.

Ryan Gosling nhìn chung cũng diễn khá tròn vai anh chàng si tình Noah và cùng với Rachel McAdams xây dựng một cặp tình nhân đẹp trên màn ảnh. “Phim giả tình thật”, ngoài đời họ cũng phải lòng nhau và đã có một mối tình kéo dài ba năm. Tuy bây giờ họ đã “đường ai nấy đi” nhưng hai người vẫn dành cho nhau những lời tốt đẹp trên báo chí và Gosling vẫn khẳng định McAdams là “một trong những tình yêu lớn nhất” của đời anh.

Từ khi được phát hành vào năm 2004, The Notebook liên tục lọt vào các bảng xếp hạng những bộ phim tình cảm hay nhất mọi thời đại. Bộ phim giành được một giải MTV Movie Awards cho Nụ hôn đẹp nhất, một giải Satellite cho Nữ diễn viên phụ - Gena Rowlands - trong vai Allie về già và 8 giải Teen Choice, chủ yếu dành cho đôi tình nhân Ryan Gosling và Rachel McAdams.

The Notebook giống như một giấc mơ đẹp nhất về một tình yêu lý tưởng: một tình yêu đi qua năm tháng, trải qua bao thăng trầm, có sức mạnh vượt qua tất cả. Một thứ tình yêu khắc cốt ghi tâm mà các cha xứ thường bắt cô dâu chú rể thề trong lễ cưới nhưng chẳng mấy ai thực hiện được - sẽ yêu nhau cho đến khi đầu bạc răng long và chỉ có cái chết mới chia lìa đôi lứa.

Sự trưởng thành cùng với những đổ vỡ mất mát trong niềm tin có thể khiến những khán giả khó tính không thể chịu nổi sự lãng mạn của bộ phim. Nhưng nếu người ta may mắn được xem bộ phim này khi đang còn trẻ và đang say đắm trong mối tình đầu, The Notebook sẽ để lại những ấn tượng không thể nào quên.
