Spelling Information for the Week of September 28, 2015 to October 2, 2015

Dear Parents,

Our spelling words for the week will include two new second grade red words and four first grade red words for review. “Red words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out. The words that cannot be sounded out must be learned in a multisensory way for storage into long-term memory. Red words, also known as sight words or popcorn words, are red because red is a warning color that tells students to stop decoding and to use their prior knowledge and/or memorization techniques.

“Red Words”

2nd Grade Red Words: very, which

1st Grade Red Words: odd, bye, even, any

“Green Words”

This week the students will once again be learning about “vowel teams.” The vowel teams are often introduced by simply noting that “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” The vowel team we will be focusing on for the week will be “ai.” The vowel team “ai” says long a. This vowel digraph is usually used at the beginning or in the middle of a word rather than at the end. We will be practicing this vowel team throughout the week in our dictation. Please refer to these dictation sheets when studying for the Friday spelling test.

Test

Please note that this week’s final spelling test will be on Friday, October 2, 2015.
