Dear Parents,

HOMEWORK: Write each 3rd Grade 1st Quarter Red Word 10 times each for Monday’s homework.

Red Words: across, because, great, listen, thought

Red Word Focus

The Red Words for the week will be the 3rd Grade, 1st Quarter Red Words, across, because, great, listen, and thought. The final test for these words will be on Friday, March 22nd. The words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will take a test over these Red Words on Friday, March 22, 2019. We will have five new Red Words from the 3rd grade list when we come back from spring break.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our Green Word pattern will be "ea" as in head and great. The students have already been introduced to one pronunciation of the vowel digraph ea as in eat. Now we will learn two other ways to pronounce ea, short e as in head and long a as in great. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words will come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more words on their Friday, March 22, 2019, spelling test.

Reading Focus

This will be our last week to read and learn about the famous dogsledding race, the Iditarod, and the history associated with this event. The students will be reading one of the following selections: Balto of the Blue Dawn, Silver, or Dog Diaries, Togo. (CCSS.ELA-ITERACY.RL.2.3)Students will complete a book study during Guided Reading time each day. Our writing focus will be poetry (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.4)), and our grammar focus will be identifying and applying pronouns and reflexive pronouns into our writing. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.C

On Friday, March 22, 2019, the spelling test will include the Red Words, across, because, great, listen, and thought, and the Green Word Pattern words that contain “ea” as in head and great.
