Math: Lesson 7, Homework

Dear Parents,

Red Words: yellow, should, their

Red Word Focus

We will review throughout the week and take a test on Friday over the following 3rd quarter Red Words: yellow, should, and their. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Students will have a final test over these words in two weeks to show mastery of these words on their Friday spelling test.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern/focus for the week will continue to be the r-controlled vowels. These are introduced as the three / ər /’s or the bossy r. The last most commonly used of the three / ər /’s is ur as in turn or burn. Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all classroom information to ten or more of the ur patterns on their Friday, January 24th spelling test.

Reading Focus

RL.2.2 Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

RL.2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

Our continued genre focus for the week will be fairy tales. We will learn to identify the elements of a fairy tale, identify character traits of each character, and complete a plot diagram of the fairy tale. We will begin to compare and contrast two versions of the same fairy tale. Our writing focus continues to be informational (W.2.2), and our grammar focus will be nouns, proper nouns, and plural nouns. (CCSS.ELA-L2.1C).

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, January 24, 2020.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp, Mr. Inman
