Spelling Information for the Week of November 27, 2017 to December 1, 2017

Dear Parents,

Red Word Focus

Our new 2nd quarter red words for the week are don’t, push, and around. These words are non-decodable words and do not follow the rules of phonics. Please remember, each student must receive a 100 percent for two weeks in a row to receive a final grade for all red words.

Green Word Focus

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

Our “Green Word” pattern focus for the week will be learning about ck. C and k say (ck) separately and together. When they are together, as in black, they are usually at the end of a word. They never appear together at the beginning of a word. When you hear the (k) sound after a short vowel in a one-syllable word, it is usually spelled with ck.

Please practice these words as your child brings them home on dictation pages. Weekly spelling words may come from the dictation pages. Students will be expected to apply all class-room information to ten or more “ck” words on their Friday spelling test.

Reading Focus

Our reading focus for the next several weeks will be Miss Holly is Too Jolly, a realistic fiction by Dan Gutman, in the series, My Weird School. We will continue to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. RL.2.7

Please note that our final spelling test will be on Friday, December 1, 2017.

Thank you,

Mrs. Arp
