Spelling Information for the Week of October 5, 2015 to October 9, 2015

Dear Parents,

Our spelling words for this week will be a review of all of the second grade red words we have studied from the beginning of school. “Red words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out. The words that cannot be sounded out must be learned in a multisensory way for storage into long-term memory. Red words, also known as sight words or popcorn words, are red because red is a warning color that tells students to stop decoding and to use their prior knowledge and/or memorization techniques.

2nd Grade Red Words: each, call, goes, pull, girl, white, talk, friend, very, which

Dictation Word List: honk, trunk, bonk, chunk, junk, clank, hunk, brink, crank

swing, clang, wrong, strung, bring, king, ring, thing, rang, sprang

This week the students will learn about –ng and –nk word endings. The combinations of sounds –ing, –ang, –ong, –ung, –ink, –ank, –onk, and –unk are taught as endings to simplify the breaking down of words for spelling and reading. Each student will write each of these endings on a separate card with a related word on the other side. The cards were sent home with the students to review each evening for practice on their spelling test on Friday. Please also refer to the dictation sheets when studying for the spelling test.
