Weekly Focus Information for the Week of May 24, 2021, to May 28, 2021

Dear Parents,

Spelling:

Red Words

RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

“Red Words” are non-phonetic words that do not follow the rules and cannot be sounded out.

Please continue to practice all 2nd and/or 3rd grade Red Words over the summer months.

Reading

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3

Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.7

Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.8

Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.

This week we will conclude our reading selection, “Freckle Juice.” We will look at how the characters change from the beginning of the text to the end of the text, and we will discuss the main character’s characteristics and the lesson(s) learned throughout the book. We will also complete a whole group reading of the text, “Last Stop on Market Street.”

Writing

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.6

With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.4

Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.5

Create audio recordings of stories or poems; add drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

Our writing focus this year will conclude with the writing of several poems that include the poetry elements of rhyme, alliteration, and repetition.

Math

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.10

Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems1 using information presented in a bar graph.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.9

Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.

We will continue our “Count By ___” this week. We have memorized counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s. This week we will practice counting by 7s, 8s, 9s, and 10s. This activity sets us up for success in third grade by developing mastery of our multiplication facts. We will continue to work on adding and subtracting 2 and 3-digit addition and subtraction problems, and we will review several common core math standard activities.

Science/Social Studies

Life Science/Interactions with Habitats/Economic Decision Making and Skills

This week, we will conclude our study of the 17-year cicada which cause change on Earth, and we will continue to learn how most people around the world work in jobs in which they produce specific goods and services and how people use money to buy and sell goods and services. We will discuss how people earn an income by working.
